What is the best time to visit Vietnam ?

What is the best time to visit Vietnam ?

Is there any weather trouble to my traveling month to Vietnam” is the first question most tourists ask themselves when planning a Vietnam holiday. There’re no exact answer because we can say nothing exactly about the weather, but there are common cases of weather for given months in each city that you should know. In addition, you might want to travel during the promotion time. Let’s find out our analytics.

Perhaps you heard about Ho Chi Minh trails ? Most people know about these famous trails during Vietnam War, but don’t know it divides Vietnam into 2 types of weather. The end of Truong Son mountain cuts Da Nang city and connects to Pacific ocean. Truong Son mountain is high enough to prevent cold monsoon from North blowing into the South. North means from Da Nang/Hoi An up North. South means from Da Nang/Hoi An down South. That’s why in January, you can see snow in Sapa and get freezed in Halong bay, but can wear T-shirt in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city).

Best time to visit Halong bay

With 200 times visiting Halong bay, we’re proud Halong bay has 4 seasons within a day. Mist in early morning, warm during your breakfast time, hot in early afternoon and pretty cool during evening. Even during coldest days, you still enjoy sunshine among the bay while it’s rainning in Halong city. In contrast, it’s sometimes rainny and windy while cruising while sunny in Halong mainland. That’s why when some tourists called us “why the boat operation is cancelled. I can’t believe in the bad weather happening over the bay because we are at the harbour and it’s sunny.  Why do I have to return to Hanoi?”, and we’re difficult to explain them in such cases.

Avoid August and the rest 11 months are fine for cruising. August is the month of typhoon. The annual tropical storms usually hit Halong bay and Gulf of Tonkin in August. Tourists tend to wait till the typhoon ends, but we strongly recommend NOT. There are 2 reasons. The typhoon blows everything into the air, and after it ends, the whole Halong bay is full of rubbish. Halong bay is not beautiful as usual. It’s a mess, so most of us don’t want to visit a mess. Secondly, the typhoon damages Halong city and surroundings. The cruise staff are worrying about their home condition after the damages, so they can’t focus in providing you with the best services. Please sympathize with them.

The best months to go to Halong bay are May and September. They’re always sunny, harly rainning, hot and dry enough. May and September are also the months of promotion. Most Halong cruises launch super discounts and special benefits in these months, so it’s cheap. If possible, please visit Halong bay in May and September.

Best time to visit Sapa

Snow can be seen in Sapa on some days of late December – early January. Sapa is the only place in Vietnam travelers can see snow. Actually, there are other mountain areas in North Vietnam as Mau Son with falling snow, but it’s in the China – Vietnamese border hence local government doesn’t allow foreigners to stay overnight.

Snow in Sapa can attract domestic tourists, but our recommendation is trying to avoid. Snow causes much trouble to tourism in Sapa. The road Lao Cai to Sapa is slippery, and all tourist buses nearly can’t move around. It’s not the danger on the road, but also hampers your trekking in Sapa villages. It’s also impossible to take photographs of Muong Hoa valley. What do you take apart from white color everywhere ? The yellow of ripe rice disappears. The red color of Hmong clothes hides in rain coats and blue sky over terrace rice fields turns into grey. During snowy days, Hoang Lien national park is closed and no tours to conquer Fansipan mountain is allowed.

Snow days are Not the best time to visit Sapa

Snow covers the terraced fields in Sau Chua, Sa Pa. Avoid the snowy days in December and January which cause much trouble to tourism in Sapa.

Sapa is at 1,600m above sea level, and the temperature is about 10 celcius degree lower than Hanoi. On the weather table above, you see it’s 10 – 15 celcius in December and January in Hanoi. Accordingly, it’s about 5 celcius in Sapa. If you find somewhere to hide the winter in Europe, Sapa is not your choice.

Festival month of February should be also avoided. “Tet” holidays or Vietnamese Lunar new year usually falls in late January – early February, and afterwards are the spare time for Vietnamese people. With  the new highway, the driving time from Hanoi to Sapa is now only 5 hours, so it’s very easier for tourists from Hanoi to visit Sapa even within 1 day. In February, Sapa is over crowded, the room rates are very high, so you should avoid visiting Sapa in February.

The best time to visit Sapa is April – early November. April – August is really hot in North Vietnam, so Sapa is a really good choice to cool down yourselves. August is the month of typhoon in Halong bay, so Sapa is a good substitution. September – early November is the autumn in North Vietnam with cool, dry, and still sunny weather, so it’s ideal for trekking in Sapa. In addition, summer is the period of sale-off. Don’t hesitate to book your hotel in Sapa in last minutes then you may get a big discount from May to September.

Best time to visit Hoi An

“Ngay ram” or “the 15th day of each lunar month” is the best time to visit Hoi An. This is also the fullmoon date of each month in lunar calendar. On these days, each family in the old quarter holds a lantern in front of their home to celebrate the fullmoon. Remember to take evening photos from Hoai river across Hoi An old quarter. It’s really splendid when the colorful lanterns brightens up the river banks.

The months of typhoon in Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An are October and November. The bad weather hits Hoi An later than Halong bay. As explained above, Hoi An is still in the North of Truong Son mountain, so it’s affected by winter. During December – February, beach lovers should NOT expect some days on Cua Dai beach, 4km from Hoi An old quarter.

Best time to visit Nha Trang

May, June and September are the best months to visit Nha Trang.

May, June and September are the best months to visit Nha Trang.

Nha Trang beach city is in to South of Truong Son mountain, so it’s hot all-year-round. The average of rainny days are 60 days per year, and it seldomly faces storms, so Nha Trang tourism is in high season all-year-round. The room rates are high accordingly. However, there are 3 months of May, June and September considered as low season. The 3 months are when domestic tourists are back home, kids are still in school, so domestic tourists don’t want to travel. The 3 months are also summer in Europe and North America, so not much foreign tourists really want to enjoy a Fareast beach. Hotels and resorts in Nha Trang usually launch promotion in these months, so you should catch up with.

Best time to visit Phu Quoc

Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc weather is similar to Phuket and Sihanouk Ville. The new rising star of Vietnam tourism owns the most ideal weather for beach leisure. Temperature is stable at around 30 celcius all year round, seldomly rainny and wide sandy beaches lures everyone at the first sight. Though you can visit Phu Quoc at any time, you should travel to Phu Quoc during May to November to gain summer promotions from hotels.

What is the best time to visit Vietnam ?

Vietnam is a special country so there’s no firm answer to this question. The most common answer is September and October, but remember even in a snowy day in Sapa, you can enjoy sunshine in Nha Trang beach and walk around hot streets of Ho Chi Minh city with short pants. Or even on an extremely hot day in Hanoi, you can trek among Sapa terrace rice fields with cool wind in your hair. A diversified weather type makes Vietnam never be a bored country to visit.
